I almost hit the snooze button, yet somehow, I resisted. Instead I got up, enjoyed a little coffee, then got dressed for my morning run. I was not feeling particularly motivated so I turned my attention to three benefits of running that get me moving! I’ll share these three with you, hoping they will help you get up and out the door.
- Running lifts your mood. It’s true! Running has a slight antidepressant effect in our brains. Running stimulates the pleasure and reward center of our brains which helps boost mood! Feeling a little blue? Put on your shoes and go!
- Running strengthens your heart! One study from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that runners had a 30 percent lower overall risk of mortality, and a 45 percent lower risk of death due to heart disease, compared with non-runners. Since heart disease runs in my family, this is a big deal to me!
- Running can help bone density. Since it is a weight bearing exercise, it stresses our bones just enough to add some density. Ladies, this is a great benefit for us!
Running certainly has more benefits, but those are three of my favorites. So next time you want to hit that snooze button, think about why you WANT to go for that run and grab your shoes!
